The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point. What matters is seeing your spending clearly and adjusting at your own pace. No amount is good or bad in itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

It’s a simple guideline for splitting your net income: 50% for needs (housing, transportation, groceries, insurance), 30% for wants (dining out, leisure, shopping) and 20% for savings and paying down debt. It’s a starting point to adjust to your own situation.

Should I use my gross or net income?

Your net income — what actually lands in your account after taxes and contributions. If you used the salary calculator, Finoutil automatically brings over your monthly net.

What if my expenses are higher than my income?

It’s common and it can be fixed. Start with the “wants” category, the most flexible one. Then see whether some needs (transportation, insurance, plans) can be trimmed. Even small recurring adjustments make a big difference over a year.
